Maya Chen, lead reviewer at KitchenDesk

Meet Maya, your reviewer‑in‑chief

I’m Maya Chen — a Toronto-based home cook who started KitchenDesk after one too many evenings spent reading the same recycled review of the same wrong product. I don’t have a restaurant résumé to lean on, and that’s the point. KitchenDesk is built for home cooks by a home cook — reviews grounded in how kitchen tools actually perform in a residential kitchen, not under restaurant-controlled conditions.

Every gadget on this site has spent at least a week in my kitchen, tested across gas, induction, and electric — because not every kitchen is the same.

What we do

KitchenDesk publishes long-form reviews of kitchen tools, gadgets, and small appliances. Every review covers performance, build quality, ergonomics, cleanup, and value — with a clear verdict at the end about whether it’s worth the price, the counter space, or your time.

How we test

Our authority comes from how we test, not from credentials. Every product on this site is held to the same protocol: minimum 7-day test window, scored on five axes, in a real kitchen with control variables. The full protocol — test rigs, equipment, the 5-axis rubric, and what disqualifies a product entirely — lives on the Methodology page.

How we make money

KitchenDesk is reader-supported. We participate in the Amazon Associates program: when you buy a product through one of our links, we earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. We do not accept paid reviews, sponsored placements, or gifted gear in exchange for coverage. Read the full Affiliate Disclosure.

Our editorial principles

  • Hands-on first. If we haven’t used it in a real kitchen, we don’t recommend it.
  • Independent verdicts. Brands don’t see our reviews before publication. We don’t accept payment for rankings.
  • Real conditions. Residential kitchen, normal countertop space, ordinary water hardness — not lab conditions.
  • Updates over evergreen. Reviews are revisited every 12 months, or sooner when product lines change. Out-of-date reviews are clearly flagged.
  • Corrections are public. Mistakes get a visible correction notice on the original article, not a silent edit.
